Dear Mayor Davis, Council members, City Manager,
I'll be brief. Do not sell the Civic or the land it's on and most certainly do not sell or lease it to the School District. (We all know where they get their money) Instead, exhibit some real leadership and commit to recreating a new Civic Auditorium for the 21st Century that retains its beautiful, landmarked North face, is versatile enough to host a variety of events and welcomes the best entertainment the world has to offer. And have it all done in time for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games.
Do it in the most public way possible and begin TONIGHT.
Address whatever state law obstacles need to be addressed and direct the City Manager and staff to begin the process for the new Civic.
--A new Civic that revitalizes international excitement about our city.
--A new Civic that draws the finest entertainment anywhere.
--A new Civic that draws film fests and conventions and hosts city events.
--A new Civic that revitalizes everything south of the 10 freeway.
DO NOT BE REMEMBERED AS THE COUNCIL THAT SURRENDERED THE CIVIC AND SOLD OUR CITY'S SOUL.
Be the Council that saves it.
No one wants to hear excuses.
Start leading. Get it done. A bold public push to create a 21st Century Civic in just five years is about the best thing this Council could do for our city.
Just Do It.
Thank you!

I've attached a video I shot in May of 2013 of the LAST LIVE MUSICAL PERFORMANCE at the Civic Auditorium... the Santa Monica Symphony performing tchaikovsky, Guido Lamell was conducting.

I shot this video a decade ago and hope you'll share it. What a moment it was... Ten years ago, May of 2013, the very last live musical performance at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. A Tchaikovsky concert performed by the Santa Monica Symphony, under the direction of the late Maestro Guido Lamell. I remember meeting him and suggesting he bring his violin to the City Council meeting and "play" his case for keeping the Civic alive and open. He played wonderfully in Chambers that night, to rousing applause, but to no avail, God rest his musical soul. Here we are now, a decade later. The Council should have the integrity and transparency to have these discussions in a public setting. Do it publicly or not at all and NOT behind closed doors. Give the Civic a chance at a new future! Why in the hell would the City Council throw in the towel, give up, and sell this to the School District, so we can pay for whatever THEY decide to put there with the mega bond money we all know the district will be asking for? Open the process. Make it Public. Save the Civic. It's future could outshine even its illustrious past if finally given a serious chance. -- J. Cyrus Smith
