I've lived in Southern California since 1992. Was Emmy Award-winning TV news producer at NBC-4. Won 4 Emmys for "Best Newscast" and "Golden Mikes" for news coverage. Left NBC to run for Santa Monica City Council in 2012. Currently work as a news writer at KTLA-TV. Taught journalism at USC from 2002-2016 and previously at UCLA and Santa Monica College. .
Born in Seattle, I graduated from the University of Washington in 1985 with a B.A. in Communications after studying journalism, computers and history. Worked briefly as a newspaper reporter, radio news anchor/reporter and disc-jockey before landing in TV News. My dad was an Air Force pilot who was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and later became an aeronautical engineer at Boeing. My mom was an incredibly talented nightclub singer who raised my three sisters, my brother, and me on her own, after my dad passed away when I was eleven years old.
I'm currently working on a book, a TV show, and getting a company started with my wife, Susan. She's a registered yoga instructor, a certified life coach and the most amazing and beautiful person I've ever met. We both volunteer in our community. I serve on Santa Monica's Recreation and Parks Commission. I'm also a member of the Sierra Club, the Wilshire Montana Neighborhood Coalition, SMDC, SMRR, the Santa Monica YMCA and Saint Monica's Church.
In 2005 I climbed 14,411 ft. Mt Rainier. I've biked more than 200 miles in one day. Twice. Met three Presidents. Ski, golf, bike, hike, walk, board, exercise and all kinds of other stuff. Sing and play guitar. So grateful to have a loving wife, son, family, and to live near the Pacific Ocean in paradise. Life is good. My parents taught me the two keys to a fulfilled life. My Mom was always telling me, "Be happy." My Dad told me something one time and I'll never forget it: "If you're smart, and you don't give up, you can do just about anything." I've always believed that... in school, on the job, and in life. Thank you for visiting my site. Feel free to leave your comments. Stay informed. It's your world. -- John
